Books and documentaries on Tanzania

Your trip to Tanzania is approaching and it's time to head to the nearest library or DVD rental store to get the lowdown. Movies on this East African country are rarely on open release and you'll find it hard to source feature films.

Very few movies, lots of documentaries

One thing's for sure, it's near impossible to find movies on Tanzania. Movies about the country are not on open release and, if they are, hard to find. Only 'Hatari' starring John Wayne and the documentary 'Darwin's Nightmare' are globally known. The best way to see Tanzania on a small screen is to watch one of the many wildlife documentaries about the plains of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Most of these are produced by European companies and you may well come across a crew filming as youtravel around Tanzania. Who hasn't dreamed of actually witnessing the wildebeest migration, watching a predator hunt, or seeing lion cubs playing with their mother? For those of you planning to visit Tanzania, these dreams are about to become a reality. Prepare to be blown away!

Literary works

As with movies, books on Tanzania are few. But they're still easier to find than movies There's Jean Rolin's 'La Ligne de Front'. A beautiful text on her journey across the country. A worthy book on a subject rarely found in the literary world.

For the most part, it's Zanzibar that's inspired authors. Check out 'Les tortues de Zanzibar' by Giles Foden, 'Le négrier de Zanzibar' by Louis Garneray and 'Les girofliers de Zanzibar' by Adam Shafi Adam - all interesting novels and travel tales.

Perhaps the greatest work is the classic 'How I Found Livingstone' by Henry Stanley. It's a great read to start on the plane and finish during your vacation.
