Italy is synonymous with good coffee, good pizza, delicious pasta, creamy ice cream, charming people, football, the Renaissance, the Mafia, and Michelangelo, amongst other things. However, there are also plenty of other things to discover and explore during a trip to Italy. Listen to what some of Evaneos' travellers have to say!
Lake Como and the city of Milan, popular destinations with stars, celebrities and tourists from all the world over, are two of the essential places to see in the north of the country. Venice, further to the east, is a veritable romantic's paradise.
Continuing more to the south, Florence and Pisa are ideal places to visit if you want to explore the country's wonderful history and its emblematic buildings and monuments. Rome, the chaotic yet both friendly and romantic capital, is best explored on foot. It of course goes without saying that you'll want to see the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, the Vatican and the sublime Sistine Chapel when visiting the city.
Continuing yet further to the south and we arrive at the gently insolent city of Naples, with its anarchic character, divine food, beaches, gorgeous coastline and, of course, Mount Vesuvius and the ruins of Pompeii. Be sure to make a detour to the Isle of Capri out in the sea off the coast of Naples, a veritable jewel of the Mediterranean.
In the region of Apulia in the east of the country you will encounter a more traditional and less touristy Italy, with its warm, friendly local inhabitants and traditional Italian food. Don't be reluctant to venture into small towns such as Trani and Otranto, where you'll find a fine combination of good ambiance, culture and great food, and all in a seaside location. A little further inland, the sights and scenery at Ostuni or Alberobello, with its famous trulli buildings, offer a veritable feast for the eyes.
Of course, we cannot discuss Italy without mentioning the large islands that form an integral part of the country. Sardinia, a lovely gem of an island in the Mediterranean, has been subject to a variety of different influences due to its strategic position. And finally there is Sicily, with its heavenly beaches, its fine food and its people, which all combine to make any trip there an unforgettable experience.
