Lamayuru is one of the most charming villages of Ladakh and is probably the most famous. During their <a href="/india/">stay in India</a>, many tourists visit from Leh or by going for a trek in the fabulous mountains of Zanskar. During a journey from Srinagar to Leh, it's a must-see stop-off point, which is more pleasant than Drass or Kargil. Upon approaching Lamayuru, I amused myself converting feet into metres, and I can assure you that I rarely sleep as high up!
I really enjoyed visiting Yungdrung Gompa early in the morning. There are many corners from which the view is amazing. Take the time to have a look around everywhere. A monk even offered me Yak butter tea: it's nothing less than... flavoursome.
I advise you to then to head down to the village's streets where you'll definitely see the villagers using prayer wheels. The white houses clinging onto the mountainside sometimes seem to be abandoned. Finally, stand back to admire Lamayuru nestled in the middle of this lunar landscape.

The small village of Lamayuru is perched in the Ladakh mountains. It's the starting point for treks in the Zanskar and must-see stop-off point on the route between Srinagar and Leh.

This monastery, located more than 100 km from Leh, sits at the top of a Ladakh mountain that is 3510 meters above sea level. The site of Lamayuru is often a departure or arrival point for excellent treks in the surrounding mountains. I have an amazing memory of an afternoon I spent with the monastery monks, with lots of laughter and Tibetan gongs and trumpets mixed with chants, while prayer flags were flying in the wind. A unique moment during my <a href="/india/">stay in India</a> ! The road from Leh to Lamayuru is long and very impressive. People who get dizzy easily had better not look out the window! Beware when planning your trip: in the summer, when the snow is melting, you run the risk of coming across closed roads.

During high summer, temperatures can peak and become scorching, at which time it is best to be in higher altitudes where the air is cooler and the heat isn’t quite so overpowering. August and September are the best times for active families looking to head into the mountains, and this is the height of trekking season when the Himalayas are at their best.
