Today an attractive Slavonian city lying close to the Croatia-Serbia border on the river Danube, Vukovar is unfortunately associated with the war that resulted in Croatia separating from Yugoslavia. Lying in the very north of Croatia and not far from the Hungarian border, the relatively quiet and peaceful towns of Varaždin and its smaller neighbour Varaždin Toplice are home to a rich wealth of ancient ruins and architecturally interesting buildings, such as Roman spas, a baroque castle and palace, and various churches … and not forgetting the several museums, which contain plenty to interest the inquisitive visitor.
A fort of italianesque shape built during the Habsburg era, Tvrđa contains the ancient centre of the city of Osijek. Surprisingly well preserved, the site constitutes a Baroque architectural ensemble of particularly significant importance. It was constructed to defend the region from the threat of Ottoman attack at the beginning of the 18th century.
Though the island of Lošinj is quite densely populated and receives a lot of tourists – who come to enjoy its natural landscape and its villages – it does also have some magnificent and little-visited bays and coves in its south, which I strongly recommend exploring!
Plitvice and the smaller Krka are parks you must visit in Croatia.
