Alice Springs is the perfect city to discover life in the Outback. Take advantage of your trip to Australia to discover this other facet of the country, light-years away from major cities of the coast.
Alice Springs is in the middle of nowhere, in the red desert in the heart of the Outback. There is no better place to go to discover the life there. Getting there requires a real effort, so to avoid a seemingly endless journey, don't hesitate for one second to opt for the plane. From Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin or from anywhere in the country, there is no better solution.
For lovers of the road, the entire journey across the Red Centre from Darwin or Adelaide is an absolutely fantastic adventure. The desert is endless, punctuated by small villages that appear out of nowhere. All of Highway 87 is simply superb. Once you've arrived, there's no doubt that you are in another country, in another world, one that is light years from the frenzy and excitement of Sydney.
With barely 28,000 inhabitants, Alice Springs is nevertheless the most important town in the Red Centre. Forget the flashy ambience of the large cities of the east coast, life here in aborigine territory, in the land of the cowboys, is tough. But don't believe that because you are in the middle of nowhere you'll be bored in Alice Springs.
Before anything, since you're in the heart of aborigine country, make sure you enter an art gallery to discover their paintings.
In town, you can also visit the flying doctors who fly from farm to farm to visit their patients.
At the Frontier Camel Farm, learn about the camels and even go for an excursion in the desert.
Chills are guaranteed at the Reptile Centre, where you will discover the most dangerous snakes of the world, all of which live in Australia. You will tremble less at the Baby Kangaroo Rescue Centre. The Centre shelters baby kangaroos that have been injured or orphaned.
And don't miss visits to the Telegraph Station, the Adelaide House Museum, the Alice Springs Cultural Precinct, of the Alice Springs School of the Air and the Alice Springs Turf Club, where you can bet on horse and camel races.
If your finances allow it, fly overthe area in a helicopter or, even better, in a hot air balloon. In the evening after flying over the region, dine in one of the city's restaurants, where you can try out bush meat. You can set your teeth into emu, crocodile, kangaroo, buffalo or camel.
